A last-minute rescue act by a mid-September anticyclone transformed the prospects of the 2002 Burgundy vintage and thrust it into the big league. All the prerequisites for a great year were satisified: crop health, moderate yields, sugar ripeness, good acidity. What was surprising was just how quickly things turned around in September. Anxiety about botrytis and lack of ripeness largely prevailed up to the 11th. By the 18th, after a week of gloriously dry, bright weather, the vintage had effectively been saved. But what style of year is it exactly? How will the wines develop? And which got the better of the topsy-turvy conditions: Chardonnay or Pinot Noir?
