Burgundy Vintage Offer 2016

The weather in 2016 was extreme. The vineyards saw severe frost and endless bouts of mildew, due to a horribly wet and humid Spring. Luckily favourable weather from the end of June through to September ensured wines from the best addresses made excellent wines – but, be warned, quantities are miniscule; the smallest we’ve seen from many of our domaines in all of Domaine Direct’s 37 years of trading.

We happened to be in Burgundy on the now infamous night of April 26th/ 27th when the temperature plummeted overnight. Awakening to a bright sunny morning we were totally unaware of the devastation that had taken place at dawn until we arrived at our first appointment in Chassagne-Montrachet and saw the damage caused by that terrible frost which had combined with a burning morning sun to devastate great swathes of the village’s vines.

Chablis had a really tough time with frost, rain, hail, mildew and even sunburnt grapes. Domaine Goisot in Saint Bris bottled virtually nothing and Vincent Dauvissat lost some 80% of his crop. Both, therefore, are not available on this 2016 Offer.

Fortunately July, August and September were good months for the vines and with a lot of work by vignerons on the frost- damaged plots, they managed to produce a small but high quality, clean harvest.

The 2016 whites are generally charming and wonderfully aromatic. Lively and bright, they seem fresher than the 2015s (though at our recent 2015 tasting many of the whites had really tightened up, shedding their early solaire character). The 2016 reds are high-toned with enticing perfumes and fresh fruit character – very Pinot Noir, with less flesh but more verve than 2015. They are pliant, crystalline and pure, with lifted aromatics.

The best whites and reds have an energetic vigour and should offer great pleasure in their relative youth. But it is not a lightweight vintage and the wines have ample structure and depth and will reward patient cellaring.

And a final note on the Beaujolais which has continued its run of brilliant vintages. 2016 is more akin to the terrific 2013 and 2014 than the seductive but turbo-charged 2015s. Here too, however, severe hail greatly reduced the crop at many domaines. The wines have focus and succulent, sappy fruit – a gloriously digestible combination.
