Denis Mortet became an emblematic figure of Burgundy`s ‘new wave’, commanding an international following for his Pinot Noir style which champions startlingly deep colours, densely-wrought palate textures and long, seamless finishes. Recent vintages saw Mortet veer away from size towards smoothness as his ultimate flavour objective, achieved through painstaking élevage in new oak, which nonetheless hardly rippled the surface of these high-energy but very refined wines. Such power and precision of flavour can only come from perfectionist viticulture and no effort was spared, through pruning, green harvesting, leaf plucking and bunch sorting, to deliver the very highest quality of fruit into the fermenter.
Following Denis` shocking and tragic death in January 2006, the domaine is now under the capable direction of his son Arnaud. By no means a cipher of his father, he has been putting his own confident and personal stamp, drive and style on the 2006 and 2007 vintages and there is much to look forward to at this domaine.
