The Chatelain family have been growing vines on the slopes around Pouilly-sur-Loire since 1630. André Chatelain, who died in 2005, was amongst the first producers in Pouilly-sur-Loire to export his wines, so starting the process of building their international reputation. Jean-Claude and Genevière Chatelain now run the family estate and have now been joined by their son, Vincent, and by Vincent Vatan, their son-in-law. The two Vincents are the 12th generation of vignerons at Domaine Chatelain. Today they have 30 hectares of vines in Pouilly-Fumé spread across six of the seven communes of the appellation. The particular Pouilly-Fumé we import is grown on a soil of a mix of silicaceous clay covered with flintstones, clay and limestone, kimmeridgean marls, producing a pronounced gunflint flavour, characteristic of Pouilly-Fumé.
The domaine employs sustainable viticulture practices. If you would like to know more please visit www.domaine-chatalain.fr.
