Six hectares, seven appellations, ranging from regional to AOC to grand cru…this Côte de Nuits operation accurately reflects the fragmented realities of landholding in Burgundy. Chambolle-Musigny accounts for half the vineyard area and includes a stunning premier cru Les Charmes. Less famous but brilliantly located between Chambolle-Amoureuses and the Clos de Vougeot is Vougeot 1er cru Les Petits Vougeots. Another highlight is the Echezeaux cuvée from the superior En Orveaux sector of this big, uneven grand cru. All the domaine`s wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered after a long élevage, generally 18-20 months. Tall, diffident, unshowy, keener on art and poetry than treatises on vinification, Christian Clerget values instinct and relies on taste, apparently happy to view his complex craft as a matter of a few simple imperatives. His wines show a disinclination to tamper with original flavour and a marked disregard for passing fashion and fancy technique.
