Over four times the size of the next largest Burgundy domaine on our list, this operation has been built up almost from scratch in the last 40 years by Paris tax lawyer - but Maligny native - Jean Durup. Its scale testifies both to the particular circumstances of the Chablis appellation, where vineyard expansion has increased the area under vine fivefold since 1970, and to the remarkable driving force of its owner. Winemaking is in the hands of the brilliantly consistent Michel Poitout, who offers different generic Chablis cuvees, reflecting site specifics and vine age, as well as various premiers crus. Now in retirement, he has handed the baton to his son Louis, a more than worthy successor. The domaine style is for pure, aromatic, medium-weight Chablis which drinks well young. No oak is used. These wines also age well, however, and the property now boasts an unrivalled range of mature vineyards with which to work.
