The youthful Frederic Magnien still serves as winemaker at the family domaine in Morey-St-Denis, but he features here for his burgeoning negociant business, set up in 1995, and now handling some 500 barrels a year. Grapes are sourced from (and often harvested on behalf of) local Cote de Nuits colleagues, with a naturally strong focus on the Morey, Gevrey and Chambolle appellations that he knows best. By choosing to specialise in winemaking, rather than grape growing, he has been able to diversify his portfolio and foster meaningful, long-term relationships with contact grape suppliers. Destemmed, hand-picked, hand sorted grapes receive generally long, extractive fermentation and 12 months elevage with minimal handling before bottling. Wines are neither fined nor filtered. Most of the wines are bio-dynamic or come from wines en culture raisonnée. Magnien`s championing of high initial grape quality and non-intrusive winemaking which is attentive to terroir nuance has produced a consistently high hit rate of intense, characterful Pinot Noir over recent vintages.
