Just two wines are made under the Spottswoode label at Mary Novak`s beautiful property: a Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The former (a 95% Cabernet Sauvignon/5% Cabernet Franc blend representing between four and five thousand cases) comes entirely from Spottswoode`s own Saint Helena vineyard which yields some of Napa`s most elegant fruit. The latter, 90% Sauvignon Blanc to 10% Semillon, is mainly from high quality external sources - including the ubiquitous Hyde Carneros vineyard. The signature Spottswoode Cabernet style was shaped right from the start in 1982, with vivid, raw fruit offset by smooth, civilized tannins. Spottswoode has produced truly great Cabernets throughout its distinguished 25-year history, with winemaking now in the hands of the talented Jennifer Williams. The finely integrated materials of Spottswoode Cabernet put the focus where it should be - on drinking pleasure, rather than on California’s obsessive pursuit of outsized flavours for their own sake.
